UPDATE - 2006 Ted Williams Tunnel Collapse

Please note - I have changed the title of this thread, in response to alarm raised by the original title. This collapse occurred in July 2006, and the end of the thread contains an update on the cause. - NRS

Section of ceiling tumbles in tunnel killing motorist
Debris strikes car; one dead
By John R. Ellement, Globe Staff | July 11, 2006

A portion of the ceiling in the tunnel connecting Interstate 93 north to the Ted Williams Tunnel collapsed last night, cascading debris onto a passing car and killing a female passenger, authorities said this morning.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene but her husband managed to crawl out of the crumpled car, said state officials, who would not release their names. The man was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

This says it all:
The tunnel system is part of the Big Dig construction project overseen by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.
That effort was billions in everyones pocket and little to do the work. It is Boston's DIRIGO

Dear Charlotte:

The corruption of the Big Dig is so extensively insinuated through the politics and business of Massachusetts that I'm afraid Boston would become a ghost town if your advice was taken.

I remember listening to the Jerry Williams Show on WRKO in 1988, when the Big Dig was a proposal, and hearing Jerry predict exactly what came to pass: record setting cost overuns, rampant incompetence and politics saturated with corruption.

Embrace the results of yet another government program Charlotte. This is what you endorse, know it or not.

Mark..is it too much to ask that when we need a safe tunnel, street, highway...that we can get qualified contractors?

What do you suggest? No government ...and all pitch in to build?

Charlotte:

14 billion later we have a man crawling away from the crushed body of his wife.

Obviously, yes, it is too much to ask.

And just as obviously, based on your intransigence on all thing governmental, people will continue making the same mistake of believing that THE NEXT government program or project will work OK.

I wonder if a privately funded and built road or bridge or tunnel project would experience similar cost overuns and blatant incompetence?

Why would we think that Road Socialism could work any better than Food Distribution Socialism?

The same scenario was occuring when the Red Sox were trying to build a new stadium in Boston. The corruption is so intrinsic in Boston, the politicians and community leaders would threaten and blackmail the owners in the open without any fears.

Plenty of people still believe the Iraq invasion and occupation has and is working. It is amazing what they'll fall for.

Why not blame the unions too, they are a favorite target. Should we hire the Chinese and Koreans to build it for us? They make everything else we use.

UPDATE - 2006 Ted Williams Tunnel Collapse

After living and working in the Commomwealth of Massachustts for over 22 years I am not surprised at all. nearly everyone and everything is on the take or done on the take. If you realized how much money was moved under the table to get anything done, you would also realize just how many shortcuts were taken with the testing of concrete used in the tunnel construction. Some, I know, quit rather than have what will inevitably happen on their conscience.

A favorite target they should be...

Corruption starts with the unions, mob run, bad to employees, murderous thugs...

Trust me if they were non-union contractors you wouldn't see this crap... My dads employees have been attacked by union contractors, they use unfair business practices and are trying to put my dad out of business right now.

But guess what, guys who are on books get jobs with my dad, because he treats them better and pays them better than the Unions, the unions were needed once, they no longer are...

Romney Vows to Take Action After Woman is Killed by Big Dig Ceiling Panels
Tuesday, July 11, 2006

BOSTON — Gov. Mitt Romney said Tuesday he was taking legal action to oust the head of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority after a woman was crushed to death by falling cement in a Boston Big Dig tunnel.

"People should not have to drive through the Turnpike tunnels with their fingers crossed," Romney said. "Neither I nor anyone else could be or should be satisfied until we have new leadership at the Turnpike authority."

Have you ever noticed how companies this inept tend to rapidly go out of business if not get indicted? With government we have bumbling on an olympic scale BUT, no one goes to jail, no one is fired, no agancy goes away, etc. All that happens is moree money is extracted from the taxpayer to be laundered through the same folk that screwed it up the first time.

Think DHHS and losing a hundred million or so...

It's great that Romney is finally moving to get rid of the MTA head... meanwhile, what's he going to do about the lousy tunnels? What a total disaster. I feel so badly for that poor man whose wife died. What a nightmare.

UPDATE - 2006 Ted Williams Tunnel Collapse

From the article linked above:
At least 12 tons of concrete fell from the ceiling of a connector tunnel late Monday, crushing a car carrying newlyweds to Logan Airport and killing the woman. The incident again raising concerns Tuesday about the integrity of the massive highway project in the central artery through the city.

Authorities said they were inspecting at least 17 other sections of the tunnel system where similar "tiebacks" were used to hold ceiling panels in place.

...snip

The victims were identified by State Police Tuesday as Milena Delvalle, 38, and Angel Delvalle, 46.
They're saying this had nothing to do with the concrete quality, but rather with the system used to tie the concrete panels in place. The contractor was Modern Continental.

Milena Del Valle, shown here in a 2005 photo, was killed when a section of the Mass. Pike tunnel collapsed on her while she was riding in a car.

From the article link in this post:
The metal tie was anchored in the concrete ceiling with epoxy, but not affixed to a metal support rail, as was done with ceiling panels in other tunnels, including those on Interstate 93 and other sections of I-90, Amorello said. Certain site locations prevented builders from using the support bar, Amorello said, without going into specifics.
AG mulls homicide in Big Dig death

Massachusetts Treats Big Dig Tunnel Where Woman Was Killed as Crime Scene
Tuesday, July 11, 2006

BOSTON — Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly said Tuesday he is treating the concrete collapse in a Big Dig tunnel that killed a motorist as a crime scene that could lead to charges of negligent homicide.

Reilly's office already has begun issuing subpoenas to those involved in the design, manufacturing, testing, construction and oversight of the panels and tunnel.

Oh, no; Not Fat Matt Amarillo. How can Massachusetts maintain its position as the most corrupt state without Fat Matt at the helm of the Mass Turnpike Authority? Why, if forced to retire he'll have to get along with only about $230,000 a year. With all his no show relatives it will likely come to over 2 mil a year. That's what happened to Billy Bulger when he departed the UMass system which is also rotten to the core.

Gotta love Howie Carr. He would be sued for libel in any other state, but his stuff could not be true in any other state.

UPDATE - 2006 Ted Williams Tunnel Collapse

I was told that some the state concrete inspectors were not really engineers as there were not enough EEOC numbers. They took secretaries and made them enginers to do the concrete tests and most of them had no idea what they were doing. Very shoddy testing was done.

There are specific slump tests etc, that will show the quality of the concrete mix and that these tests were highly suspect, yet many of the test records are now missing. How convenient!

I for one would hold my breath while passing through the big dig tunnels for sure. Is there no way to get to logan now without going through one of these tunnels?

From up here it's easy to avoid the tunnels altogether on the way to Logan. Stay on Route 1 south where 95/128 merge north of Boston and follow the signs. No tunnels, no tolls.

From the Boston side it's a little more roundabout, but it can be done (and you can always use the old tunnels, which seem to have stood forever without collapsing).

Now, I'm confused...

I've heard conservatives say over and over that private industry does everything better and wonderfully, yet, over and over we see this sort of corruption and graft. Enron. Worldcom. Tunnel. etc...

I thought we needed to ELIMINATE all regulations to UNFETTER businesses that are being killed by over-regulation...

Yet it seems from things like this we need more oversight of what private businesses do.

In this case, they admitted using the wrong concrete mix to save costs...

Chris.

UPDATE - 2006 Ted Williams Tunnel Collapse

Chris this has been a major boondoggle for all administrations in Mass going back to Dukakis. The hiring and oversight of the firm doing the work is done by the Mass Turnpike Authority that is laden down with political appointees all over the place who have varying level of competence in this field. The authority is now not accountable to anyone. Not to the legislature. Not to the Governor. Not to the voters. Fat Matt changed the rules so that he is not even accountable to the board of directors by requiring that any changes to the agenda have to be approved through him. The board accepted that change so it may come down to a court challenge.

Chris: You are off base here. This is an example of the inability of government to do its job or to protect the public. This was a government project and a contract with a government agency. If the government can't ensure safety in such a situation, how can anyone expect them to do it in a non-government job?

I'm still confused.

The construction was by a private company which has now admitted to cut costs they used sub-par concrete.

That's the fault of the government how?

Chris.

UPDATE - 2006 Ted Williams Tunnel Collapse

Chris, this one incident is a problem for the company. The series of unstoppable problems and the lack of controls and supervision over the entire project is the fault of those providing oversight- the Mass Turnpike Authority.

While Fat Matt has been giving jobs to every brother and cousin of state reps- some overseeing key parts of the Big Dig- these problems have multiplied.
