John McDonough....Portland City Council?
Good guess. He actually lost that race to Jack Dawson, who is not a Republican.

I was thinking of his University of Maine Student Body President loss to Stavros Mendros.

Actually it was a bad guess. John was a democrat back then and not in that race.

Jack Dawson is unenrolled and acts like a republican sometimes, especially on fiscal matters.

Ahhhh...I forgot that one. If I'm not mistaken there was something fishy about that election??

Not at all. The controversial elections at Orono were after Mendros' time.

I thought after Strimling lost a close election to Dawson he wanted a recount but elected not to after he was told by the "D" braintrust of Portland talked him out of it.

I thought you meant the Mendros win.

Strimling's council race showed him to be a complete scumbag. He lost the race, had a recount, and argued that ballots where the write-in box was checked but no person was written should be counted as votes for him because his name was above the write-in space. His lawyer actually convinced a majority of the council to count such votes for him to steal the election from Dawson. Only a huge up roar in the press convinced Strimling to back down.

What he did in that election should be enough to disqualify him from consideration for any office. The guy has no respect for democracy or the rule of law. He is simply power hungry. Win at any cost.

Thanks for the clarification.....this history lesson should get some of Strimling's disciples all bent out of shape i.e Charlotte and Coose.

Dan, I disagree...once he made his case, it was clear the council supported him. However, when voters showed they did not agree...he declined to take the position. Those same voters have..in large numbers, voted him into office. I guess they disagree with you.

Dan, I agree with you but I think Strimling will be around for many years "working for us", he has strong support from the type of people that bother to vote.
In response to Dan Billings' query: Stavros Mendros at UMO. Do we care is the greater question. Obviously, Ethan's star has risen higher that his former adversary's.
Campbell 7,383 19%
Mendros 8,022 21%
Raye 11,861 30%
Woodcock 11,542 30%

District 1 Totals

Chellie Pingree 23450 44.22%
Adam Roland Cote 15033 28.35%
Michael F. Brennan 5676 10.70%
Ethan King Strimling 5537 10.44%
Mark W. Lawrence 2610 4.92%
Stephen J. Meister 721 1.36%

doubled his percentage,

50% more votes votes for me

40% more votes cast in that election

with only 1/5 the money.

I'd say I did pretty well.

Oh yea and I won my hometown with over 50% I didn't come in third.

And Stavros did win his House seat as a Republican in a Democratic city.

I doubt Strimling could have won anywhere else but a Democratic city or had any crossover appeal in a Republican town or to independents.
